Trakehner mares in Poland – analysis [aktualizacja:28.02.2009]
Trakehner mares in Poland – analysis at 7th year of PTA’ activity
Polish Trakehner Association (PTA) has organized seven horse reviews since it’s reactivation in year 2000. Annual horse reviews have been done by Trakehner Breeding Committee that has consisted of members from Poland, Germany and Lithuania. Therefore, additionally to the number of Polish experts, including professor Sławomir Pietrzak and professor Szczepan Chrzanowski, one could watch grading process performed also by experts from Germany as Lars Gehrmann, Hans Werner Paul, Joachim Gusovius, Jurgen Hanke, Pius Harlacher, Hubertus Poll, Ulrich Gorlo, Hans Ernst Wezel and Arunas Jurgaitis from Lithuania.
More than 500 horses, including 278 mares, have been reviewed. Group of mares consisted of: 8 mares xx, 1 mare xxoo, 1 mare xo, 13 Trakehner mares from some countries of former Soviet Union, 8 Trakehner mares registered in Polish Trakehner Stud Book and 248 Wielkopolska mares.
Presence of Wielkopolska breed in this statistics needs additional explanation. Accordingly to the Polish regulations, horses of Trakehner origin were not considered as a separate breed until year 2005. Each horse with Trakehner pedigree have been registered at Wielkopolska Stud Book. It was a matter of enormous effort and struggle of PTA to convince relevant authorities that Trakehners should be registered in a separate Stud Book. Final permission to set up and to maintain Trakehner Stud Book has been granted on July 2005.
xx – means Thoroughbred
xo – means Angloarabian
oo – means Arabian
xxoo – means Angloarabian TB

Each pedigree of Wielkopolska horse has been diligently scrutinized and four of them have been rejected. Only it’s offspring will be approved for Trakehner Stud Book. Only one ancestor in the 6th generation can be from different breed than Trakehner, East Prussian, xx, oo, xxoo, xo or Shagya.

Analysis of mare’s bloodline

Systematic of bloodlines follows the rules of German Trakehner Verband that divide mare families into five different groups:
  • A - Arabian and Angloarabian families (A-families),
  • E - English thoroughbred-families (E-families)
  • O - East Prussian families (O (for the German Ostpreußen) - families)
  • T - Trakehner families (T-families)
  • S - Other families (S (for the German sonstige) - families)

Ours statistics looks as below:
  • A – 6 mares                that is 2%
  • E – 58 mares              that is 21%
  • O – 167 mares            that is 60%
  • T – 38 mares               that is 14%
  • S – 6 mares                 that is 2%
  • undefined 3 mares     that is 1 %

Group of families A, however not numerous, had very interesting representatives. Two mares represented family A - Konstancja 1936. It is very old and respected family. One of renowned family member was Kondor (by Aspirant, out of Kordyliera by Parysów xx). This stallion was used for breeding in Poland and Germany.
Group E was represented with 32 families. Families that had the largest representation were:
E – Avesta (1966) from Plękity (7 mares),
E – Wenda (1963) from Rzeczna (5 mares),
E – Agresja (1947) from Liski (4 mares)
E – Balanda (1961) from Liski (4 mares)
E – Igława (1957) from Rzeczna (4 mares)

Group of families O was the biggest one. It has had representatives of 39 families. The biggest of them were:
O – Stokrotka (1944) with 19 mares
O – Cyganka (1939) with 14 mares
O – Kontuzja (1942) with 11 mares
It is a matter of concern that some of once well populated families in Poland disappears and therefore we need to mention families with one representative only. Families being in Poland at the edge of extinctions are:
O – Białka (1938)
O – Busola ex Busserl (1935)
O – Cartagina ex Carthago (1936)
O – Freiheit (1941)
O – Leda Szczepowicka (1941)
O – Limuzyna (1943)
O – Proza (1942)
O – Sarna (1938)
O – Stella (1941)
O – Wierna (1943)
O – Wysoka Woda (1940)

Group of families S consist of families that have been established by other warmblood mares as Poznańskie, Wielkopolskie, Pomorskie, Hanoverian etc. Mares of that group were mated through the generations with stallions of Trakehner, East Prussian, xx, xo or Shagya only. Within this group were:
S – Afanasja (han. 1933) with 2 mares
S – Sztumka (pom. 1943) with 2 mares

The most valuable group of mares is the one where pedigree can be traced down to 18th century – Trakehner families T. Founders of those families belong to the lines of mares born in main Trakehnen Stud, and were active after WWII. Mares from 10 T-families were reviewed:
T – Angara (1944)/(Soldatsche 1782)           2 mares
T – Beresina (1939)/(Tiberiussche 1782)       1 mare
T – Chwała (1944)/(Lore 1905)                     4 mares
T – Goldenkammer (1943)/(Fatme 1787)      7 mares
T – Klio (1938)/(Fatme 1787)                       1 mare
T – Legion (1942)/(Moosrose 1783)              2 mares
T – Norma (1943)/(Normaniana 1915)          8 mares
T – Partie (1940)/(Luftsprung 1775)             10 mares
T – Sportule (1943)/(Sportwelt 1918)           1 mare
T – Tamożnaja (1944)/(Soldatsche 1782)      2 mares

Mares that gave the most offspring (each gave 3 filly) were:
Avola (by Arianin, out of Avra), Dalmacja (by Akropol, out of Dagma), Kutyna (by Poprad, out of Kutia), Mercedes (by Midas, out of Sepia), Nemezja (by Pistolet, out of Nimfa), Sewilla (by Arianin, out of Suma), Weryna (by Donbas, out of Winca).

Sire lines, due to historical reasons, are named after famous stallions from Trakehnen stud and for those borne after WWII after pure breed stallions – founders of contemporary lines. Mares that were reviewed represented numerous sire lines traced back to Trakehnen (26%) or lines after stallions xx, oo and xo founded contemporary. There were mares from the line of:
Ararad            9 mares
Dampfross      6 mares
Parsival           2 mares
Pilger              46 mares
Pythagoras      2 mares
Tempelhuter    7 mares
Line of Pilger is the most popular in Poland as well as in Lithuania, Russia and Estonia.

Number of lines founded by Thoroughbred stallions were established after WWII. In the reviewed pool judges gave marks to mares belonging to the following xx lines:
Parysów          - 36 mares,
Perkoz            - 21
Labirynt          - 19
Aquino            - 18
Raufbold        - 18 (through Priz, Pogremok, Pris)
Dakota                        - 14 (through Dietmar, Mangan, Oregon)
Parole Board   - 14 (through Elpar, Jaguar)
Wolver Heights – 8
Prince Rouge - 5
Other 21 stallions xx gave limited number of offspring (below 5).

There are seven mares only belonging to lines oo or xo. Four of them belong to line of French stallion Nithard AA. Comparing reviewed pool with global population of Trakehner mares, one can clearly notice lack of famous sport horse lines xo as Ramzes and Burnus and lines oo as Priboj and Fetysz.

The most popular stallions as a father were:
Arak               by Parysów                 14
Ogar               by Aspirant                 11
Ignam             by Akropol                 10
Pigmalion        by Arak                      10
Aragonit         by Kobryń                  9
Elpar               by Parole Board         9

Pool of mares that were reviewed in years 200 – 2006 originated mainly (70%) from the state owned studs as:
SK Liski                     67 mares
SK Plękity                  59
SK Rzeczna                42

Private studs and breeders who delivered remaining mares were:
SK Wozławki             M. Romanowski                                14 mares

Canter
One considers as the most important factor to determine usability of sport horse. Grading used by Polish Trakehner Association is different from the one used by Polish Horse Breeding Association because PTA judges canter separately and pays big attention to it – as this is the gait predominantly used at each sport competition.
Grading ranged from 5 (Magia by Lwów from Marek Przeczewski and Pointa by Gawot from SK Plękity) to 9 (Chmura by Arbór from Marek Romanowski). The average grading was 6,67.

General impression.
Grading from 5 (Era by Kerman and Literatka by Dziurawiec from SK Liski and Syga by Gawot from SK Plękity) to 9 (Baluca by Larduc from SK Racot. The average was 6,87.

All together 278 mares have been graded in seven annual reviews, 9 of mares haven’t got complete grading due to injuries, lameness or advanced pregnancy at the moment of review. As many as 37 mares (13%) did not received more than 45 points that is the minimum to be qualified for breeding in Trakehner breed. Average total gradings varied from 38 (Era by Kerman from SK Liski) to 60 (Chmura by Arbór from Marek Romanowski. The grand total average grading for the whole pool of mares in years 200 – 2006 was 47,95.
Highly graded mares (above 50 points) were 71 that was 25% of all. Besides leading Chmura the first 10th was:
Czarka by Czubaryk xx from SK Plękity - 55, Tarantela by Razrjad from SK Eklips (Ukraine) – 55, Wielka Woda TS by Germanic xx from TS Księżno – 55, Aukcja by Elpar xx from SK Plękity – 56, Centra by Elpar xx from SK Plękity – 56,5, Orawka by Arak and her daughter Oliwia Life by Life and Liberty xx from SK Liski – 56,5, Baluca by Larduc from SK Racot – 57, Bella Donna by Aragonit from Marek Romanowski – 57.
It seems to be interesting to compare grading with 70 points scale used at PTA with grading with 100 points scale used at Polish Horse Breeding Association. When recalculated to 100 points scale wives results from 77 to 82 points!
Quarterly paper “Trakeny” shows a list of mares that were submitted to the formal review in years 2000 – 2006 and constitute a foundation stock for Trakehner breed in Poland. Due to continuous efforts of breeders and owners it became possible to select horses necessary for further well controlled breeding of Trakehner. Analysis given above makes a base for the evaluation of breed development in the future by comparison.

One can draw a picture of Polish Trakehner mare until 2006:
it is bay, predominantly from family O, mostly from the line of Pilger trk or Thoroughbred, with height of 165,66; size of chest 199,08; size of canon 20,72. Her total grading at annual review is 47,95. She demonstrates a good type (7,06), a good trot (7,13), not a bad conformation (6,865) and she makes a good general impression (6,87). Her weakest traits that needs some improvements are legs (6,59), walk (6,75 and canter (6,67).

One can be optimistic when learn analysis of grading given to the actual offspring – new generation bred by members of our association. This generation is different and at many cases better!
